Step 1: Find the exact wine or whiskey barrel

First, you have to find perfect barrel for your coffee table project. You could find it at secondhand online stores such as e-Bay or Amazon. Go to local whiskey or wine supplier is another option you could do. You just need half barrel so you need to cut one full barrel into two part.

Step 2: Clean out the barrel

Before the project starts, you need to clean your barrel, both inside and outside. Wash the barrel with clean water and brush it if necessary. Next, you could remove the barrel’s metal bands. Do it with strong pry bar. Remove the bails carefully then take the metal bands off.

Step 3: Sand it!

The barrel’s surface could feels too rough to touch. Definitely, you need to sand it with good sand paper. Do it repeatedly until the surface feels extra smooth.

Step 4: Stain it!

You could use some brushes to stain your barrel with the “Special Walnut” from Minwax. Let it dry for a while before moving to the next steps.

Step 5: Reassemble it!

After that, you should put the metal bands back in each place of it. They could be one great ornaments for your table.

Step 6: The Base

Your half barrel need some base or table legs. Measure the right place for the base, it is about 25 inches. You could make the base from 2×12’s woodcut.

Step 7: Table Apron

Next, you have to create the table apron. Just like previous part of the table, you need to measure it precisely.

After all of the components are ready, now it is time to attach them all! Prepare your screwdrivers and nails. Of course the base need to be secured as neatly as possible. However, you could just place the table apron on the top of the barrel.

Step 9: Finishing Touches

You may need to re-stain some parts of your coffee table. Don’t forget to apply polyurethane for more protection.
